Why "Sea of Japan" is a matter?

Hi everybody,
State Virginia has voted to teach the geographic name of "East Sea" instead of "Sea of Japan" for their children under the pressure of a strong Korean community, saying the latter denomination comes from a Japanese colonization of Korea in 1910.
This argument is a pure fantasy of Korean nationalists because the first Chinese world map Kunyu Wanguo Quantu (A Map of the Myriad Countries of the World) created in 1602 by a Italian missionary, Matteo Ricci, at the request of a Chinese emperor, already mentioned "Sea of Japan" and not "East Sea". applause
I've also checked with an aid of my friend who has a great collection of old Asian maps made by Westerns in 18th century. The conclusion is: 90% uses "Sea of Japan", 10% uses "Sea of Korea" and none uses "East Sea", the name Koreans requesting Virginians to use.
Below is the picture of Matteo Ricci's map around Japan which mentioned clearly "Sea of Japan" in Chinese characters.

Have a nice day

Very informative! If I can pick, I would prefer "Sea of Japan" because Japan owns larger percent of it.

Sounds to me like they are trying to make education 'politically correct' rather than factually correct. That happens a lot in American schools where they teach what they think should be history rather than focusing on what really is.

Oh my goodness. I agree with you Beverly. I think American schools should teach history rather than political correctness.

I would definitely stick with the original Sea of Japan name rather than changing it in any way just to answer some sort of political pressure.

The thing that came to mind most when I first read this discussion was how when I was in elementary school and how they did not teach us the real American history, the story of the Native Americans and how everything was sugar coated. They talked about the discovery of America but not the indigenous peoples. Later on, my dad got us these amazing historically accurate books that detailed many of the struggles of the Native American nations (this was when I was in the third grade) and it was an eye opening experience. Nothing like that was being taught in school as if they did not want kids to know the truth.

Now I make sure that my own daughter has access to the latest information available on all cultures and history and aspects of science so that she can make up her own mind. I don't feel the need to hide the truth from her. History might not have been nice, but it's what happened.

Hi Beverly,

I think it's great that you are making sure your daughter has access to the latest information available. I am glad you are not trying to hide anything from her, even if it may not be pretty. Kudos to you. You sound like a wonderful mom.
