Being in a car accident is always an upsetting experience, but maybe more so if you are in a place where you don't speak the language. However, you should know that the Japanese police have a translator on call, so it's alright if you don't understand the language as someone will be available to assist you. Here are some common things you will be asked. What the police will ask you for: 1. Driver’s License 自動車免許書 じどうしゃめんきょ jisousha menkyosho 2. Alien Registration Card 外国人登録証明書 がいこくじんとうりょくしょうめいしょ gaikokujin touryoku shoumeisho 3. Form showing shaken is up to date 自動車検査証 じどうしゃけんさしょう jidou shakensa shou 4. Form showing you have the mandatory car insurance 自動車損害賠償責任保険証明書 じどうしゃ そんがい ばいしょう せきにん ほけん しょうめいしょ jidousha songai baisyou sekinin hoken shoumeisho As in all situations, you should remain calm. And, take photos of the accident scene for your own personal documentation. |

It is never good to be in a car accident, but I had no idea the Japanese police always had translaters on call. That is great since so many foreign born people spend time in Japan and it is a great place for tourists who might not speak the language. Great list. I am assuming the Alien Registration Card is the Passport? Or is it something else? Also, what is the Shaken card? That is a mystery to me. |

More recently, the alien registration card has been replaced by a new "resident card" (zairyu kaad) which is issued by the national government. This seems to be an identification card, complete with photo and basic stats of the foreign person who has been allowed to legally live in Japan. The new system also improves tracking of foreign nationals within Japan allowing for up to five years of continued residency within Japan for foreigners. Previously it had been only three years which a foreigner was allowed to live continuously in Japan. Typically a 'resident card' is only required for someone staying more than three months such as a student or someone from America or other country that is now working in Japan. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Beverly at Jul 7, 2014 7:11:51 AM] |
