Can someone please translate the meaning of this Kanji: 甘(Mi) <-- character is not showing up on the post

I understand it is a common word in Japanese meaning "sweet". I know the individual meanings in Chinese, such as the first character is Gan (sweet) and the second, Mei (beauty). But how is this character combination used in Japanese? In what context? Also, is it a common girls' name since Mi (Mei) as a second Kanji character seems to be popular for girls names?

Thank you very much! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

甘い (amai) is how it is used... well, one way.
