Well, they exist several ways to say "happy new year" in Japanese. My preferred sentence is 新年おめでとう御座います You can also say briefly 謹賀新年 if you send an e-mail. Please note that the greetings should be pronounced when the new year has arrived. for it is not an wish but a happy day.

Here is the Romaji pronunciation of "happy new year" in Japanese.
新年おめでとう御座います = shin nen omedetou gozaimasu
or colloquially, おめでとう = amedetou
謹賀新年 = kinga shin nen (only in literal style Japanese)
Please note that "happy new year" means:
1) in English
We wish you a happy new year
2) in Japanese
We are happy to see a new year arriving or literally, we are glad to assist in the opening of a new year (I mean we are still alive :-).
So, never use those expressions before the first day of a new year.
