I hate this word, what does it mean?
It's everywhere, think of:
shipnames: toyama-MARU
swords: kogarasu-MARU-zukuri style
the guy from Shaman King: amida-MARU
the ol' one: oroshi-no-MARU

Is it always the

Kanji? (I hope it displays, it is 'kyu'(9) with a backslash through the first stroke.)

Please help me...

"Maru" is a suffix for the children's name in the ancient Japanese (it was a Japanese custom to give a different name during the childhood). Later this usage has extended to other things that people love like their children such as dog, cat, horse, sword, music instrument, ship etc.
I call my dog 黒丸 (Kuromaru, 黒 = black), somthing equivalent to "blacky" in English.
Regards,
