Again I'm stuck in translation :-(. Can you please help? The problem is in this 2 sentences:
それは細く立ち上がる陽炎のようでもあり。あるいは闇に沈む氷塊の、どんよりとした潤 みのようでもあった。

This is the thin rising heat haze... Or there is a block of ice, sinking in the darkness, dim and opaque...
ようでもあり/ようでもあった - I can't figure out how to translate it
でも means but, however, but probably it's some kind of set phrase?

Sorry, i just can't clear it out myself..

...のよう suggests "appearance of"
...のようでもあり、...のようでもあった
It appeared to be... or .....
The writer is trying to be poetic, using contrasting imagery.
My try (although it is not a good one)
It appeared to be haze rising faintly into the air -- or the dull, dark wetness of an iceberg sinking into the gloom.
(Please note I have deviated from faithful translation, but you should get the idea. Express the sentence in your own words.)
