What is Kanji, Romaji and those other ones. I'm new to all these but I'm very interested in learning about Japan's culture.
So I guess this is my beginning! Thanks for helping out!

Oh one more thing. My computer doesn't support Japanese language so I won't be able to see any of those funny symbols I've been seeing with the other ones.
So just explain will be fine so I can get a general knowledge. Thank you so much!

Romaji is roman letters.(aka the letters we use in english)
Hiragana and Katakana represent sounds.(NOTE: Katakana is used for non japanese words, like computer and internet.)
Kanji represent meanings not sounds.

Take a look a this site:
http://www.yesjapan.com
This is where i have been learning japanese and it is in my opinion the BEST place to learn japanese.
Give it a look.
It is worth every dollar! (which is only $19.99 a month,
i think about $12.99 for standard membership)

Well heres the best i could come up with.(keep in mind i have never tried to find the meaning of a name before.)
"truth reason beauty"
There are other possible meanings for Mayumi(depending on the kanji used for the name),
but i think it's "truth reason beauty".
As i said i have never tried to find the meaning of a name,
so if anyone thinks im wrong please correct me.

I have posted before to explain that there are no fixed kanjis for names of people, although the previous poster gave the most popular rendering of Mayumi: 真由ü (each character meaning truth, reason (as in cause), and beauty)

There are also: 真弓、麻由ü、まゆみ、マユミ and many others.
Mayumi in romaji is only the phonetic representation of the name. In Japanese, each girl name "Mayumi" carry different meaning to her name -- most of the time.

That is why the choice of characters is very important when giving a name to a newborn child.

PS It appears that the kanji character for beauty does not show correctly in the forum.
