I am planning to get a tattoo done at some point which will be a design with a character such as love or eternal with my name and my bf's name in Kanji. I have almost completed it, but wished to get an opinion on whether one of the characters I had chosen for my bf's name is suitable.

His name is Martin, which i have changed to Machin. For the "chin" character, I have one meaning rare, or unusual which i am happy with. However, there are hardly any good meanings for "ma". In the end I have found a kanji character that doesn't have a meaning but is used phonetically only.

Is it acceptable to place such a character at the beginning of a name?
