Posted on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 10:03 pm:

Dear Daisy chain,
Writing style is "Kaisho", which consists to write each stroke plainly and distinctly. This style is widely used on the computer screen because it is easier to read than other styles.

If you begin to attach some strokes by distorting or simplifying them in order to write quickly with brush or pen, it is called "Gyosho". It is less used on the computer because difficult to read and to make artistic fonts.

If you begin to attach each letter by simplifying further strokes, it is called "Sosho". It is not used on the computer because you have to implement an attaching algorithm for each combination of characters and it is not an easy matter. Moreover, most of the people nowadays are unable to read it.

Yes, Japanese use the same character for Orchid as Chinese.

Kind regards,

Your name is on the bottom, your husbands on the top.

http://www.boomspeed.com/matjlav/fitzgeralds.jpg

Your first name means "Mysterious beneficial desire", while for your last name I couldn't find any sequence of characters which would give them any real meaning. As it is, it would mean "Attach to one metropolis, consulting with questions and stopping." Doesn't make any sense, huh? Couldn't make it shorter, either. Your husband's first name means "the dream's soul." Same for the last name.

Could someone please help me translate/spell my unusual nickname into Japanese? It is spelled Guamarhea Balls. The first word is pronounced "gwam-ah-ree-ah." Literally, the whole nickname means "testicles infected with/by the sickness of Guam (the country)." This is a nickname given to me by the Hash House Harriers; an international social running club. I would like to be able to write this nickname on my Happie robe that I wear at each Hash event. Please email me. Thank you.

Please note that traditional japanese is only used in modern writing formally. Normally, you would just write normal roman 9 instead of the above character. It is pronounced "kyuu" (like letter Q)
