Dear Chi Yan, traditional Chinese or Japanese letters are written vertically from right to left. Sometimes, you see horizontal writing from right to left but it is in reality a vertical writing with only one character at each column. The modern horizontal writing with from left to right direction has been invented by Japanese when they wanted to create a bilingual dictionary with a western language because displaying the correspondence of 2 words, one vertically written and another horizontally, is not practical. You can find how to write Mt Fuji while other terms should be found with a search function at the right top corner of this page. kind regards, | ||

They are phonetic writing. So, they're basically pronounced like in English, although the pronounciation is more like "dansu" for dance and "ke-ree" for Kelley. | ||

Peace is usually: 平和 If you need calligraphy, go to http://www013.upp.so-net.ne.jp/santai/santai.htm Copy and paste each character to find them and click the appropriate ones. You'll find each kanji character written in three styles (print, semicursive and cursive styles). Remember not to mix the three styles in a single word. Pick one style and stick to it. | ||

アリガトウ is thank you in katakana symbols. However, that is not proper writing. Proper writing would be ありがとう or 有難う. Actually, 有難う isn't proper, but is more commonly used than 有り難う, the proper way. But, as I was saying, Thank You is not usually written in katakana. It's pretty weird to do that. | ||

jim, I'm not sure if it is Japanese or Chinese, but I will give you as much information as I can. First, the kanji (or hanji if it is Chinese) is written in the old style from right to left. It appears to be a box or case for eyeglasses(掛眼鏡). It says it is a '98 model (九八式meaning it is probably made in 1898??). 實体 is 実体 in modern Japanese. It means "actual" or "real-life" today. This means that it may had a different meaning in the old days, or it may have been the name of the product. You have to check with an elderly Japanese for that, which I can't do now. That's about the only things I can tell you. | ||

Ms. Anon, Thank you for your help. I am not sure at this point if it makes sense. The box would be large for eyeglasses. It measures 6" x 3 3/4" x 2 1/2" with a hinged top. The box was locked, andwhen we got it opened (it was empty) inside the cover were the following characters  | ||

Please note that I'm just guessing. Considering that eyeglasses were expensive at that time, It may have come in very ornate boxes (something like a gift box for a diamond ring), far larger in size that what's in it. This practice in packaging is very common in Japan, even today. I've checked 掛眼鏡 and found that the word denotes eyeglasses both in Japanese and Chinese. I thought of the possibility of it being a microscope or telescope but found none suggesting that. Regarding your second picture, I think it means the 18th year of the Showa Period (that's 1943) at the top. The bottom is the kanji for "east," possibly suggesting Tokyo (東京). It was probably manufactured in 1943 in Tokyo. That means "98 Model" is the name of the product and not the year of manufacture. | ||
