Only one problem.

The concept of "repenting to God" did not exist in Japan, because the japanese vision of gods is very different. So there is no Japanese word for it.

They don't repent to their gods in Shinto? If they do, wouldn't that be the equivalent?

Is there a Japanese word for repent at all???

Thanks!

The Shinto gods were a little bit like the Ancient Greek gods and Ancient Egyptian gods. There is 'Good' and 'Evil', but not really 'sin'.

The closest word to this is 'koukai', but this word's meaning is "regret", not "repenting to God" (some dictionaries might say 'koukai' = 'repent', but most Japanese people do not associate the word 'koukai' with God).

I actually recently had it translated somehwere else and they came up with "Kuiaratameru".

Is that pretty close or not really?

Thanks

That would mean "to regret a wrong action and attempt to correct it".

It's closer, I guess, but as I said there is no exact translation of "repenting to God" in Japanese.
