Hello, I was wondering if anyone here used the textbook "Genki: an Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese" for self-study. How is its description of grammatical elements? I find Eleanor Harz Jorden's "Japanese: the Spoken Language" to be very thourough in its treatment of grammatical points, but I hate how it insists on using romaji. I have the Kana Edition of "Japanese for Busy People", but I find it light on its treatment of grammatical points. How does "Genki" compare to these? Is "Genki" useful even if you do not get the workbook and CDs? I'd like to get these, but the CDs are so expensive. I'm debating about whether or not to purchase the workbook. I read somewhere that a lot of the workbook exercises require the CDs to complete. I am aiming to learn Japanese primarily for reading, and maybe writing to a pen pal. It is very doubtful I will have the opportunity to speak it, so I am not targeting the speaking and listening aspects of learning Japanese. Please let me know your thoughts on "Genki" as a textbook. Thanks.

Don't expect an answer to such a specific question, this forum is pretty much deserted.

You might have slightly better luck at http://www.polykarbonbbs.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15
