Japanese spell of Tsunami is 津波
which means literally "Waves of harbour". It is because Tsunami runs faster without loosing power when the sea is deep and once it penetrates into a bay, the only possible issue to stop is to hit harbours frequently located at the bottom.
The most devastating Japanese Tsunami took place in 1896 in north eastern coast of Japan (Sanriku region) and about 20,000 people were killed. The maximum recorded height was 38m above sea but according to survivors, it might reach well beyond 50m. The same region was hit by another Tsunami in 1933 and lost 3000 people.
Being aware of the extreme danger of Tsunami, now all the Japanese archipelagos is covered by an early warning system and some vulnerable regions such as Sanriki organise each year an evacuation exercise.
