Author Message   Mr. Anonymous Posted on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 10:31 pm:    Hello, welcome to the HOUGEN (方言) thread. 方言 means "dialect" and is denoted by the suffix 弁. Examples: 甲州弁 (koushuuben) 関西弁 (kansaiben) 九州弁 (kyuushuuben) Personally, I use 関西弁 (kansaiben). 関西弁 sounds more friendly and many comedians come from 関西 (kansai) which is the western part of Japan. People who speak 標準語 (hyoujunngo), or the basic Japanese, live in 東京 (toukyou) area. For people in Japanese class, this is all that you may hear, so, I would like to start a thread with this theme! i will post some terms, and their translation into 標準語 (hyoujunngo).
