Hello, welcome to the HOUGEN (方言) thread.

方言 means "dialect" and is denoted by the suffix 弁.

Examples:
甲州弁 (koushuuben)
関西弁 (kansaiben)
九州弁 (kyuushuuben)

Personally, I use 関西弁 (kansaiben). 関西弁 sounds more friendly and many comedians come from 関西 (kansai) which is the western part of Japan. People who speak 標準語 (hyoujunngo), or the basic Japanese, live in 東京 (toukyou) area. For people in Japanese class, this is all that you may hear, so, I would like to start a thread with this theme!

i will post some terms, and their translation into 標準語 (hyoujunngo). Also, i will hope that others post too!!

Woah, i just remembered about this thread! Hahaha. Looks like nobody added to it...

Well, FIRST post about 関西弁 (kansaiben):

アカン = 良くない or いけない in 標準語

文例:
やらんとアカン (yaran to akan) "i/you/he/whatever has to/have to/must do"

pretty much off topic, but... what's up with やらん? is 〜あん a colloquial substitue for 〜あない?

やらん is やらない
九州弁 is the 方言 of 九州

Can 〜あん just be used anytime? or only in やらん?

I've been wondering for a while; what's さかい at the end of a sentence supposed to mean?

ok, a few answers.
almost anywhere in western japan then use certain styles that are associated with 関西弁. for example:
やらん - やらない
わからん - わからない
いらん - いらない.
but somethings are still specific to the area within kansai, such as あかん which is used in 大阪 and the like, and the same meaning いかん which is used in 九州 and 四国.
another characteristic of western japan is the way to use だ or です. usually it is や, as in やから, or やけど, or やった. in 京都, instead of です they sometimes say どす. and in 広島 and 四国, they sometimes use じゃ instead of や or だ, as in じゃけん, which means だから in standard speech.

oops, gotta go do homework now... bye then. sorry, don't know about さかい yet.
