I know that "hello" or "good day" in japanese is 今日は (konnichi wa) but I have a feeling that it's not the modern, casual way of saying "hello." Am I right? I looked around and found some stuff that I would like someone to clarify about exactly in what cases it is used... もしもし (moshimoshi) - "Hello" on phone おおい (ooi) - "Hey" (my dict says this is also an adjective... what does it mean and in what manner is the adjective used) こら (kora) - "Hey" (my dict says this is also a conjunction... explain) おいおい (oioi) - "Hey", "What ho" (my dict says this is also an adverb, explain, yet again) お前さん/御前さん (omae-san) - "hey" (my dict says this is ONLY a noun... what?) Someone tell me if these are commonly used, and what others there are, and what are the most common formal and informal terms. ありがとうございます！ Thank you so much! | ||

もしもし "Hello" for the phone, or, in some cases, to get someone's attention. おおい This could be 多い which means "a lot" or "many". Also, it's not used very much as a greeting. More, people would say おいっす こら This is one of those "them's fightin words" again. This is used when you are angry. コラ、てめー。逃げるんじゃない！ (kora, temee. nigeru nn janai!) "HEY, YOU. YOU'RE NOT GOIN ANYWHERE" おいおい "hey, hey". Usually "hey" in the annoyed sence. "hey, hey! don't do that" or whatever. Also, おいおい泣く (oioi naku) means "cry one's heart out" or "cry bitterly" お前さん It's just お前. Another "them's fightin words" if you don't really know or have never met a person. VERY informal/vulgar. Also, 貴方様 means 貴方さん means 貴方. You get the point... | ||

and what's up with 逃げるんじゃない? the んじゃない, I mean. I'd think it would be 逃げるなよ！ or something for "DON'T GO ANYWHERE!" | ||

ではありません・じゃありません・じゃない we went over that before... Then, we went over "you must put の between です and a verb" That の can be shortened to ん as in: 行くのですか -> 行くんですか This can be translated as "are you going?" In the same respect: 行くのじゃないか -> 行くんじゃないか This can be translated as "are not you going?" or "aren't you going?" Now. That was an inquisitive form. Here is the, erm, uh, non-inquisitive form: 行くのです -> 行くんです "you are going" 行くのじゃない -> 行くんじゃない "you are not going" So, if we say that forcefully, we would get "YOU ARE NOT GOING!" Transpose that to 逃げる and you will get 逃げるのじゃない -> 逃げるんじゃない "you are not fleeing (going anywhere)". Say that forcefully, and you get "YOU ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!" Does that make sense? | ||

On to the 逃げるな(よ) plain verb form + な(よ) will yeild "don't verb!" in a rude sense... Therefore, 逃げるなよ would be "don't flee (run away)" | ||

I forgot to say that "YOU'RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!" is just a loose translation... if you want more direct translation, it would then yield "YOU'RE NOT RUNNING AWAY!" or "YOU'RE NOT FLEEING!" Does that make sense? Would you like me to specify when i do "loose" and "direct-ish" translations? | ||

As for こら, it's an interjection, not a conjunction, i'd say.... 【文例】 こら、待て。 Hey, you! Wait! こら、そんなことは止せ。 Look here! None of that. | ||

Could you be more specific with "er... could you explain when some of those are used?" Also, maybe you looked at から and found "conjunction"? cuz that means "because" or "from". | ||
