I've seen two different translations for the phrase Happy Birthday...the first 9 symbols are the same, but when you put someones name at the end there seems to be an extra 5 letters before the persons name is written...why is that...I'm looking to write: Happy Birthday Erin and I would like to get the proper symbols...can nybody help clear this up please...thanks in advance...

If Erin can read Japanese, he will be happy to read this thread and explain to you the difference.

御誕生日おめでとうございます

I think this is your version. That is a more polite way of saying it, but it seems as though since you're his friend, then it shouldn't be so formal.

My girlfriend's birtday is on Tuesday. I would be grateful if someone could translate "Happy Birthday, Ginette" into Japanese. Also, do you know of a website where I can "hear" the translation?

Thank you very much.

well, there's no website where you can hear it, but there is one where you can get it translated into Romaji, I'm not sure if you could find one to translate it into Kanji, though. If you find the actual words Happy Birthday translated into Kanji, just say it as best you can : /

For those of you who are wondering...

御誕生日おめでとう

means happy birthday, and the name (not inclded in the above) is written in Katakana (a style of japanese writing for foriegn words including names). If you want to have someone's name in Katakana, learn it yourself...or you can go to this site: http://www.e.kth.se/~e96_dsa/www/nihongo/eng_onamae.html

I am looking for characters to put on a cake for a going away party. Any suggestions would help. I am trying to keep it simple (2-4 characters). Some ideas have included Good Luck, Happy Trip, Luck and Happiness. Thank you!
Jeanette
