Karen, It's not all that easy to give you the Japanese characters for what you want, because I (and probably many other Japanese speakers) can't understand what you're getting at. What are "snow wolf", "rising phoenix" and "mibu"? There are many shades of meaning for "honor." That is why there are many words in Japanese that are translated into "honor" in English. Perseverance is: 忍耐 (nintai) There are many interpretations of perseverance, so your four-character translation may be right. (I can't tell.) These characters cannot be shown vertically on this forum, unless they are posted as images, which unfortunately I can't. To do it yourself, you copy these characters as image (assuming that your OS is Japanese-enabled) and make them vertical yourself. (Of course, "nin" comes at the top.) | ||

Thank you so very much for such a quick response! What a great forum! I can only imagine the vast number of interpretations that there can be for any given word or concept. I'm assuming that they read left to right, and can be placed vertically in that order. I was trying to copy and paste the four symbols that I was given so that someone here may try giving me a literal translation, but wasn't successful. The writing under the symbols is "Kennin-fubatsu". Could anyone provide a tranlstion of that and how it compares to "nintai"? Thanks again for your help :o) | ||

Kennin-fubatsu must look like this: 堅忍不抜 It is a phrase that means rock-steady perseverance in a way that you don't lose sight of your initial goals. Nintai simply means perseverance, as you would under stress, enduring hardship, etc. Japanese is read either top-down (and right to left) or left to right (and top-down). The latter became widely accepted with Japan's Westernization. Originally, Japanese was written top-down/right-to-left, as in traditional Chinese. | ||

I got a tattoo about 8 months ago, back in August, and it is the kanji symbol for perseverance. I got it out of a translation book, so I figured it was pretty reliable, but I wanted to make sure. I found something very similar online at http://www.ideogear.com/jukugo/u6a5fu6839 , but I only got the lower symbol, not the upper one. According to that site, the lower symbol doesn't quite mean perseverance by itself. Is the symbol combination on that site correct, and do I need to add the upper symbol for it to mean the right thing? I don't know if there are different views of 'perseverance', but it is supposed to mean enduring hardship and pushing forth no matter what. Anyway, if someone could let me know, I'd really really appreciate it. If you could email me, that would be great, but if you only feel like posting on here that's fine. Thank you! - Keith | ||

Keith, 根 (read "ne' or "kon") originally means "root" as in plant root. It is used in combination with other kanji characters to suggest patience, endurance, etc. (because of the immovable image associated with plant root). So, the character itself holds that meaning. However, if I should see your tatoo for the first time, I would interpret it immediately as plant root. I think tatoos should express the meaning at first glance. I recommend you add another character to suggest perseverance, such as: 根性 (konjo): Tenacity or will power 根気 (konki): Patience, endurance 機根 (kikon): Spiritual strength, drive to take action after gaining understanding of Buddhist teachings. | ||

Saiyanzzrage, You want to add a character underneath? That makes the choices very few. Words that start with "chiraka/riki" most often suggests physical strength or brute force. There is a far wider range of words that end with the character. One decent choice is: 力闘 (fight with all of your might) | ||

Although writing vertically is used for calligraphy, it is no longer necessary to do that in Japanese. The common way is horizontally, left to right, as in English. | ||

Literally, it means "remembering (deceased) Father." It is read "chichi o shinobu." Chichi: Father o: Japanese particle (grammatical term) shinobu: remember (used only in reference to those who have passed away) | ||
