General Nogi

explanation: Japanese general, born in 1849 in Yamaguchi prefecture. After having participated to Boshin war against Edo shogunate in 1868, he studied military tactics in Prussia. Once retreated and become a farmer, he was called again to participated in Sino-Japanese war. During Russo-Japanese war, he commanded the 3th army to capture Port Arthur. Though he was not clever tactician, his fighting sprit formed the base of Japanese military doctrine. He committed suicide in 1912 after the death of Emperor Meiji.

explanation: Born in 1560 in a samurai family of south Hyogo prefecture. By following Kuroda Yoshitaka, Nagamasa father and son, he participated in Kyushu campaign, Korean invasion and Battle of Sekigahara. Thanks to his military exploits, he became a chief vassal of Nagamasa but soon lost his fief by felling in disgrace and wandered about. He was recruited by Toyotomi Hideyori for the siege of Osaka castle in 1614. He was killed in the battle field in 1615 during the summer campaign (Osaka Natsunojin).

explanation: Buddhist priest of Nara period. Born in 668 in a Paekche descent family of southern Osaka. After having studied Buddhism from Dosho and Gien at Yakushiji temple, he traveled through different provinces to preach Buddhism and helped peasants to build bridges and dikes. Initially persecuted for troubling peasants, he succeeded soon to indoctrinate Emperor Shomu and participated in building Todaiji temple. He would have drawn the oldest Japanese map (Gyoki zu). He died in 749.

After he had returned back to Japan, he was confined in a secret place because Christianity became forbidden in Japan during his voyage. He died in 1622 in obscurity. The replica of San Juan Bautista, the ship used by him to cross the Pacific is moored at Ishinomaki harbor.

By serving 4 successive shoguns, he contributed greatly to set up different laws of Tokugawa regime such as Buke shohatto and Shushigaku as official ideology of Tokugawa regime. He died 1657.

explanation: Ideologue of Edo period. Born in 1738 at Tokyo in a samuai family. Because of a crime committed by his father, he had been excluded from samurai's hierarchy. He studied at Nagasaki and lived in his uncle's house at Sendai. In order to get a job, he wrote many books: the most famous one is "Kaikoku heidan" which recommended sending massively colons to Hokkaido against Russian incursion. Accused of troubling the public order, his book was banned by Edo shogunate. He died in 1793.
