explanation: After Kanagawa treaty with USA in 1854, this one was concluded between Russian Admiral Putiatin and Japanese Kanjo bugyo, Kawaji Toshiakira at Shimoda city in February 1855. It stipulates that henceforth the frontier between 2 countries should pass Etorofu and Uruppu islands in Kuril while Sakhalin remains a common possession. Another provision of the treaty expects the opening of 3 harbors, Nagasaki, Shimoda and Hakodate, to supply waters and firewood to Russian ships.

explanation: Situated at the extreme south of Sakahlin island near cap Nishinotoro (cap Crillon) facing Soya strait (La P�rouse strait), Shiranushi had been the second trading post after Kushunkotan. When the latter closed at the end of summer, Japanese moved from Kushunkotan to Shiranush and remained there until the end September then left Sakhalin because the snow will begin to fall and all the activity cease in Sakhalin.

explanation: Born in Awaji island in 1769 in a poor family. He became the richest merchant of Ainu's land (Ezochi) by opening a route to Etorofu island and was accepted in samuirai clan. Russians captured him as a retaliation of the capture of captain Golovnin, off the coast of Kunashiri island. During his imprisonment on Kamchatka peninsula, he learned Russian language and strove with Golovnin for a reconciliation of the 2 countries after his liberation. He died in 1827.

explanation: Born in 1719 in a hatomoto family and engaged as a page by Tokugawa Ieshige who would become later the 9th shogun. So he entered Edo castle and gradually rise his position to become a daimyo and a roju. His policy is characterized by active economic plans such as promotion of guilds, patents and exploitation of new rice fields and mines. He planed also to exploit Hokkaido but never realized because he lost the power after the scandal due to a bribery. He died in 1788.
