The Japanese Food Pyramid

Here's a typical food pyramid for a Japanese menu plan. As you can see, the food pyramid differs from the one shown far below for the American diet in many ways. Though there are some similarities, Japanese usually don't eat as many fruits (maybe due to cost or lack of availability) and also consume more fish and eggs in place of the typical Western meat counter part.

They are very similar, more so than I thought they would be! I was expecting a much different pyramid when I clicked on the post.

Re: The Japanese Food Pyramid

Cherries are not a real basic staple of most American diets. We go more for citrus type fruits and juices. Though apples and bananas and even some type of melons are very popular, especially in breakfast type dishes or deserts.

Although fruit is better for you than most things us Americans eat, it does have lots of sugar. I also notice cheese is missing from their pyramid....interesting.

Re: The Japanese Food Pyramid

I actually seem some key differences.

For example, the Japanese eat a lot of tofu, which Americans, except those on certain specialty food plans, don't eat.

I personally love tofu, but don't use it much because my friends and family don't like it.

I knew a woman some years back who was Japanese and she made the most wonderful dishes with tofu. I love it stir fried.

Also, it's true the Japanese don't eat a lot of fruit, but they do like their plums.

In the US people are eating more blueberries and lots of nuts. I did not see those on the pyramid anywhere.

One of the reasons American people battle their weight is due to over eating of carbs which is often tied to bread and bread products. I hope the same does not happen to Japanese people who may eat more bread then before.

I really love to compare the two pyramids. Thanks for the topic. Very interesting.

Yes! My daughter is a really big fan of peanuts and requests those on every grocery shopping trip, even more than chips (which she loves). I love how peanuts are so healthy and though higher in fat, it's not a dangerous fat.

Re: The Japanese Food Pyramid

I completely agree Beverly. I also like peanut butter, cashews, cashew butter, walnuts and almonds.

All very healthy to add to any diet...unless of course you're allergic to nuts. Then...it's not such a great idea. :-)

Cashews are my favorite! Also pecans! Oh! I love pecan pie so much! I'm such a Southern girl. :)

This is one of my all time favorite desserts. Walnuts are good too, especially enjoy those with brownies.
